BodyWorks: A Toolkit for Healthy Girls and Strong Woman
The Office on Women's Health, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has developed BodyWorks: A Toolkit for Health Girls and Strong Woman. The program is designed to help parents and caregivers of young adolescent girls (ages 9 to 13) improve family eating and activity habits. Using the BodyWorks Toolkit, the program focuses on parents as role models and provides them with hands-on tools to make small behavior changes to prevent obesity and help maintain a healthy weight. HPV Vaccination Program for Young Women
On Friday, February 2, 2007 Texas Governor Rick Perry issued an executive order directing the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to adopt rules requiring all girls age 11 and 12 to receive the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine prior to entering sixth grade, effective September 2008. The executive order also directs HHSC and the Department of State Health Services (DSHS)to make the vaccine immediately available to eligible young females through the Texas Vaccines for Children program for young women ages to 18, and through Medicaid for women ages 19 to 21. Parents may choose to opt out of mandatory vaccinations for reasons of conscience, including religious beliefs. The governor's executive order directs DSHS to ease the opt out process by providing exemption request forms online. Resources for Families On Treating Depression in Children and Adolescents
A new web-based resource center is now on-line for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with depression. Developed by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the newly launched web site includes a fact sheet for families titled The Use of Medication in Treating Childhood and Adolescent Depression: Information for Patients and Families. The fact sheet, developed in consultation with NAMI and other family advocacy groups, includes practical advice for families about treating depression in children and adolescents. It also includes information about the recent FDA decision to require a black box warning for antidepressant medications. The www.ParentsMedGuide.org web site also includes a guide for physicians on treating depression in children and adolescents, including information on treatment alternatives and the latest science and research findings.
